Biography

Janelle Lyons is an experienced employment and civil litigation attorney who represents individuals whose rights have been violated in the workplace and beyond. She focuses her practice on helping employees who have been subjected to discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination, and wage and hour violations making sure they are treated fairly and held accountable when they are not.

With more than 20 years of legal experience, Janelle has handled complex litigation in both state and federal courts. She has represented clients through every stage of the legal process, from the initial claim through trial. Her practice is centered on litigation, and she is committed to building strong cases that give her clients the best opportunity to recover what they deserve. What sets Janelle apart is her deep insight into how employers defend these cases. Before focusing her practice on representing individuals, Janelle spent years defending companies, municipalities, and organizations in high-exposure employment and civil litigation matters. She understands how employers evaluate claims, the strategies they use, and where their vulnerabilities lie. She uses that knowledge to anticipate defenses and advocate more effectively for her clients.

In addition to litigation, Janelle is a certified North Carolina Superior Court mediator, giving her additional tools to resolve cases when appropriate while always keeping her clients’ goals at the forefront.

About Me

Over the course of my career, I have developed a deep understanding of how power operates in the workplace, how decisions are made, how policies are shaped, and how those processes often affect employees who have the least ability to protect themselves. I am committed to advocating for individuals navigating systems that were not built with their success in mind, and to doing my part to ensure that the law serves not only those with power, but those without it.

The most important aspect of the law to me is real meaningful access for everyone. I believe that justice should not depend on resources, privilege, or power. There must be safeguards in place to ensure that those with the least are not pushed further into the margins, but instead are given the same voice, dignity, and opportunity to be heard and made whole as those with far greater means. To me, the law is at its best when it levels the playing field to protect, restore, and affirm the worth of every person, especially those who are too often overlooked.

The best advice I can give anyone who thinks they’re being discriminated against at work is to document everything. Keep track of decisions management makes about your performance, your evaluations, and the terms and conditions of your job. Just as important, pay attention to how others in similar roles are treated and document that too. Those comparisons can make a big difference in showing what’s really going on.
