About Me
Tell me about a time when you felt discriminated against, picked on, or bullied and how that impacts how you do your job?
My first job was working in the stockroom of a bookstore as a teenager. One day, while applying price labels to a shipment of books, the manager of the store told me to stop labeling while sitting and to instead do it while squatting. It wasn’t any faster, and it only put more strain on my back and knees in an already physically demanding job. All it did was tell me that I wasn’t valued by my manager and that I shouldn’t stay with that employer long term.
Why did you decide to practice employment law?
Many people spend a significant amount of their lives in the workplace. That makes justice in the workplace a critical element in building and maintaining a fair society. I wanted my work to be about advancing such justice in the workplace.
What’s the most important aspect of the law to you?
The most important aspect of the law to me is it (ideally) provides equal protection to all those subject to it. The employees’ rights statutes, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, are an important tool in ensuring the employees enjoy equal protection and fairness in the workplace.
