I worked for a bakery after moving to Ohio and worked as hard as I could to be the best employee. After a few months, I was offered a chance to step into a management position that would oversee about 3 different location across Northern Ohio. My boss and the owners met with me to discuss the responsibilities and to formally offer the position and during that meeting they asked me if I’d be able to uphold a positive attitude and keep our team members motivated. I disclosed to them that I had some trouble with anxiety and ADHD, and that while I would try my best to remain positive 100% of the time, that isn’t possible for anyone. After hearing that, they told me I was no longer a good fit for the position, and that if I was sad or distracted while working for them, then maybe I’m no longer good fit within the copmany.
I think about that situation a lot now. I’ve never let my conditions prevent me from doing the best job possible, and employers that can’t see passed that aren’t worth working for.
